Peter Lish: A Patent Expert with a Unique Blend of Experience

With a career spanning over a decade in the patent law industry, Peter Lish has carved a niche for himself as a trusted advisor and expert in patent prosecution and litigation. His journey, which began as a law clerk at McAndrews in 2007, has seen him rise to the position of a shareholder, gaining invaluable experience in a variety of technological areas along the way.

Mastering the Art of Patent Prosecution

Today, Peter’s primary focus is on preparing patent applications and managing patent portfolios across a range of technologies. His expertise spans the chemical, petrochemical, energy, medical device, and mechanical fields. His clients, both large and small, rely on him for freedom-to-operate, invalidity, and non-infringement opinions relating to utility and design patents. His extensive experience in post-grant Patent and Trademark Office proceedings, particularly inter partes reviews, further strengthens his portfolio.

As a former patent examiner, Peter brings a unique perspective to patent prosecution. His ability to use patents to protect clients’ products and services, or to ensure they do not infringe on others’ patent rights, is exceptional. His writing skills, particularly his ability to translate technical concepts into clear, persuasive arguments, make him a valuable asset in any patent-related scenario.

From Patent Examiner to Patent Expert

Peter’s journey into the world of patents began at the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), where he worked as a patent examiner. He was part of Technology Center 1700, reviewing patent applications related to chemical products and processes. His specialty was carbon nanotechnology, and he also worked extensively with catalysts and sorbents.

His expertise led to his selection as a member of the small group responsible for creating the USPTO classification system directed toward nanotechnology. During his tenure at the USPTO, Peter was a member of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office Society and a regular participant in the Atlantic Nanotechnology Forum.

Academic Excellence in Intellectual Property

While in law school, Peter excelled in Intellectual Property courses such as Patent Law, Trademarks & Unfair Competition, IP Litigation, and Telecommunications & Internet Policy. He served as an Articles Editor for the Northwestern University Journal of Technology and Intellectual Property, further honing his skills in the field.

As an undergraduate studying chemical engineering, Peter completed extensive coursework in areas such as Chemical Reaction Engineering, Process Design and Materials Science. He also gained laboratory experience in fields including organic and analytical chemistry. In addition, Peter tutored students in argument formulation and persuasive writing techniques as a member of the University of Notre Dame Writing Center.
