Nokia Signs 5G Patent Licensing Agreement with Vivo, Resolving Litigation and Strengthening IP Portfolio
Nokia has recently announced a groundbreaking multi-year 5G patent licensing agreement with Chinese smartphone giant Vivo, marking the sixth major deal the Finnish multinational has sealed in the past 13 months. This deal not only signifies a significant milestone for Nokia but also signals the end to all pending patent litigation between the two companies in various jurisdictions.
The agreement covers Nokia’s essential inventions in cellular technologies, ensuring that the Finnish company will receive payments from Vivo over the coming years, including catch-up payments to cover the dispute period. This deal follows similar agreements with tech giants such as Apple, Samsung, OPPO, Honor, and Huawei, solidifying Nokia’s position as a key player in the smartphone industry.
Jenni Lukander, president of Nokia Technologies, expressed her satisfaction with the deal, highlighting Nokia’s crucial role in developing technologies that are vital to the entire smartphone industry. With this latest agreement, Nokia’s IP division is moving closer to concluding the smartphone licensing renewal cycle and is focusing on growth areas such as automotive, consumer electronics, Internet of Things, and multimedia. Nokia anticipates that its IP licensing business will generate at least €1.4 billion ($1.5 billion) in operating profit by 2024.
